The South African flag flew the British Union Flag as their national flag from 1910 and was the only flag flown until 1925, when the Afrikaner post union government took their place in South Africa. At that time they wanted to make provisions for a new national flag for the union, and this action alone, prompted a 3 year civil war because the British believed that the Boers wanted to remove the imperial symbols from the flag. In 1928 they compromised and adopted a separate flag for the union which was first flown on May 31st 1928.

This new design was based on the “Prince’s flag” from Afrikaas, or the original dutch flag, used in the mid 1600’s to the late 1700’s. The only difference is that South Africa added three smaller flags within the white stripe. It is believed that the Prinsevlag (prince’s flag) was the first flag to be hoisted in South Africa and was a neutral flag because at the time it was hoisted it was no longer a flag of any nation.
