There are many versions to the old fashioned American flag, after all the flag has been changes more than 26 times. The first is said to have been the Grand Union Flag although it never had an official status as that, but when the declaration of Independence was signed in 1776, this is the flag that was flown.

In 1777 the Marine Committee did make an important flag resolution which has since affected any United States flag and especially the old fashioned American flag. The resolution states that the flag must have 13 alternating red and white stripes that represent the 13 american colonies. In those years they also stated that their must be thirteen stars on a blue field, also representing those thirteen colonies. Since then 50 stars have been added, but at the time there were many variations of thirteen stars, most of these were individually made, and not fabricated. In fact the Betsy Ross flag is considered the oldest version of any U.S. flag to appear.

No one really knows whose idea it was to create stars and stripes, but there is a story that says that Betsy Ross sewed the first flag form a sketch given to her by George Washington.
