It seems that at one point the king of Hawaii, Kamechameha was given the Union Jack which he flew from his home, but then certain American officials felt offended, so he took it down. Later he was given an American flag to show his support during the war of 1812, but he then offended the British officials. So he combined the two emblems and created a new flag.
There are other vintage Hawaiian flags that were created after this, the Ka Hae Hawai’i is said to have been designed similarly to a British naval flag, but other experts say that the flags design is attributed to the red, white and blue colors of the American flag.

The first Hawaiian flag was designed with seven horizontal stripes and later change to eight stripes and that is the current Hawaiian flag.
