German Flag

The old German flag has many influences and some of those influences date back as far as the Holy Roman Empire of the 13th and 14th century. In fact that is the basis of the colors of black, gold and red in many of the old German flags and even in today’s German flag.

The story goes that the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation did not have a national flag after 1512 but the colors of black and gold were used as the colors of the Roman Emperor and used in the imperial banner. A black eagle on a gold background was usually used. The red and white flag also became important to this nation when The holy Roman Empire took part in the Crusades. At the time a war flag was flown along with the black and gold banner and this became known as the Saint George Flag in reverse of that used by England.

When The Germans began to fight against the occupying French the colors of black red and gold became significant again, and was present in much of the Prussian army uniform colors. Uniforms were black, red and had gold buttons. The choice was more for simplicities sake that for any reasons of loyalty. Members of the army had to supply their own clothes and it was easier to dye them black for uniformity, they used gold buttons, and red pennons. The colors symbolized the motto: “Out of the darkness (black uniform) of servitude through bloody (symbolizing red color)conflict, to the light of freedom”(gold symbolizes freedom).
