California Old Flag

Actually the California old flag is a great purchase because it’s a flag that has an interesting story as most US flags do. A flag that depicts the real frontiersman’s life and trials, if you love US history and want a remembrance of what it took to have this great nation of ours, then the California old flag is the one you want to buy!

The California old flag is based on “the Bear Flag” which was flown during the bear flag revolt. This flag was adopted by California in the early 1900’s as the state flag. Currently The bear that is depicted is a California Grizzly bear, a species that is now extinct, but the original bear was just a depiction of the many grizzlies that could be found in California.

The flag was designed by William Todd on what was not considered any special type of material. In fact the flags beginnings are very humble. A piece of unbleached cotton was used and then a star was placed on it, and a grizzly bear which represented those seen in the state. At the bottom the words California Republic were placed.

Apparently the original state flag was made of unbleached cotton strips of Mrs. Sears red petticoat, which she wore across the mountains, and a piece of brown domestic one of the ladies of the garrison donated. The words “California Republic” were printed with a pen. The original bear is said to have appeared to look more like a pig than a bear, but it was the best that the new Californians could do at the time.
