Tibet did not have an official flag because from the 9th to th 18th century they did not have an official army, but in the 18th century they needed to defend themselves against the Nepalese. But the 13th Dali Lama wanted to unite all army flags and have one represent them all. The Snow Lion flag served as the official military flag for all of Tibet until 1950 when China invaded.

Today the Tibetans in exile still use this flag to represent their nation.

In china it is forbidden to fly the Tibetan flag except for in Hong Kong which has their own judiciary and regards the flying of the Tibetan flag as a freedom of expression.
