Antique European Flag

In 1950 the council of Europe began to search for a special flag that would represent the union of the different countries best, but actually the firs European body to adopt a flag was the European Coal and Steel community who unveiled their flag in Brussels at an Expo in 1958.

That first flag was blue at the top and black on the bottom with six stars, three on top and three on bottom. The stars represented the members at the time. Later the stars were increased to twelve as the number of members increased.

This was the representing flag of the European Union for many years and this Antique European flag wasn’t replaced until 2002 when it was lowered from the European Commission in Brussels and replaced with the current European flag.
There were other antique European flags that were used along the way as well. In 1973 the European Parliament designed its own flag, but it was never formally adopted and fell out of use in 1983 when the twelve star flag was presented.

The European Union has taken a long time in forming and along the way three or four different flags have been used, but none official until the current one adopted in 2002.
